Dublin Information

Dublin (pronounced /ˈdʌblɨn/, /ˈdʊblɨn/, or /ˈdʊbəlɪn/, Irish: Baile Átha Cliath, meaning "Town of the Hurdled Ford", pronounced [bˠalʲə aːha klʲiəh] or [bˠɫaː cliə(ɸ)]) is both the largest city and capital of Ireland. It is located near the midpoint of Ireland's east coast, at the mouth of the River Liffey and at the centre of the Dublin Region. Founded as a Viking settlement, the city has been Ireland's primary city for most of the island's history since medieval times. Today, it is ranked 10th in the Global Financial Centres Index, is an economic, administrative and cultural centre for the island of Ireland and has one of the fastest growing populations of any European capital city...more on Wikipedia.org

The Liffey Swim is the penultimate event in a season of 26 open water races held during the summer months and it is a handicapped race, there being a time penalty imposed based on a swimmer's ability.

Entrants to the Liffey Swim must complete 5 races of the season to qualify for the Liffey Swim. All levels and ages of swimmers compete in the race, however an entrant must be a member of a swimming club and be able to swim a mile. Nowadays the total average entry to the race is 200 males and 80 females.

Swim Ireland organises the race and approximately 70 of their volunteers manage the race. For many years the swim was sponsored by the Irish Independent newspaper, and in more recent years it has been sponsored by the ESB, Speedo, the EBS and Toyota. Dublin City Council has always been associated with the event.

Geographie

In diesem leben ca. 1,1 Millionen Einwohner (CSO Census 2002).

Stadtgebiet

1541-1800 Kingdom of Ireland

U2 to play third Dublin concert

Supergroup U2 is to play a third concert at Croke Park in Dublin this June, it was announced today. The band added the new date to their Vertigo world tour following an agreement with the GAA, who own the massive sporting venue. They will now play Croke Park on Monday, June 27 as well as Friday, June 24 and Saturday, June 25.

The additional date was negotiated due to phenomenal demand and means that the group will now play to around a quarter of a million people in their home town.Around 160,000 tickets for the other two shows sold out within hours of going on sale.Details of when the tickets for the third show will go on sale have not yet been finalised but a statement is expected soon.

The news of the triple Dublin date was announced on the band's website - wwwU2.com - today by manager Paul McGuinness. It follows ongoing denials from the promoters MCD that the band was planning another gig in the Republic's capital.Mr McGuinness said:

"We have resolved the issues with the GAA and are delighted to announce that U2 will play a third show at Croke Park on Monday, June 27. The band is very excited about playing to a quarter of a million people in their own town and we're going to do all we can to ensure that tickets are distributed fairly."

Even with the extra 80,000 tickets we know there will be some disappointed fans, such is the demand.

"We are working on the details of getting the tickets on sale and will announce it as soon as we can."

No support act has been lined up yet for the new show.Bono, Larry Mullen, The Edge and Adam Clayton are currently on tour in the US and will kick off the European leg of their summer tour in Brussels on June 10.

Berlin Anticonformiste Festival 2005 - Whelans, April 23rd

Check out the first annual Berlin electro festival in Dublin.
The festival features three of Berlin's if not Germany's best electro bands: STEREO TOTAL, COBRA KILLER and JEANS TEAM.

The venue is Whelans and this crazy night of electro will take place on Saturday, April 23rd!!

STEREO TOTAL is the German-Franco duo of Francoise Cactus and Brezel Goering. Formed in 1993 in Berlin, they have released six albums and toured worldwide, including their support slot with The Strokes.

As co-founders of the legendary Galerie Berlin Tokyo clubspace in the mid-nineties, JEANS TEAM spearheaded the early Berlin underground.

From 1995 COBRA KILLER were precursors of a style of aggressive rock n’ roll and electrobeats that became known globally as Electroclash at the beginning of this century. Peaches played her first Berlin gig as support for Cobra Killer.

Supported by the Goethe Institute, the inaugural Berlin Anticonformiste Festival will kick-off what is to be an annual showcase of German music’s sharpest edges, blowing the dust off Germany’s image as a land of dodgy power ballads and buffing up the side of her musical history that produced luminaries such as Kraftwerk, Neu! and Einstürzende Neubauten.
